Attributed to Diego de Cuentas, Portrait of Archbishop Fray Felipe Galindo Chávez y Pineda, about 1700. Oil paint on canvas; 6 ft. 8½ in. × 50½ in. Gift of the Collection of Frederick and Jan Mayer, 2015.544.
In addition to being a very individualized portrait of the Archbishop of Guadalajara, this painting illustrates the wealth of the Church and showcases symbols associated with the sitter's role in the Church. The cleric wears vestments, crafted of luxurious fabrics, and a cross set with jewels, possibly emeralds, suspended from a gold chain. A long beaded rosary hangs from his waist and on his right hand is a gold ring, set with a stone. On the table are books, an inkwell, and a bishop’s miter (hat) decorated with six jeweled pins. The sitter's accomplishments are outlined in the scroll in the lower left, and his tasseled family coat of arms appears at upper left.
